Approval of the project on Geopark development

The Prime Minister has approved the project “Conservation of geological heritages, development and management of Geopark Network in Vietnam” with the target of 25-30 national or global geoparks recognized by 2030.

The project will be implemented from 2014 to 2020 in the centrally-governed provinces and cities with geological heritages including: Lai Chau, Lao Cai, Son La, Hoa Binh, Yen Bai, Phu Tho, Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Lang Son, Tuyen Quang, Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Hanoi, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Khanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Dong Nai, Vinh Long, Ca Mau and Kien Giang.

The project will deploy activities of scientific research on geological heritage conservation, development and management of geoparks; conservation institution and policy improvement, rational use of geological heritages and geoparks in Vietnam; propaganda promotion, awareness raising of geological heritages and geoparks; international cooperation strengthening.

The target of the project is conservation and rational use of geological heritages, management and sustainable development of Geopark Network in Vietnam with the specific goals striving to 2020 of overall research and assessment (on a scale of 1/200,000), detailed assessment (on a scale of 1/50,000-1 / 25,000) of geological heritages and prospect of geopark construction in 25-30 areas in Central and Southern Vietnam; construction and submission for approval of the competent authorities on the recognition of 5-7 national geoparks; submission for approval of United Nations Organization for Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) on the recognition of 2-3 global Geoparks.
