2018 LIST OF NEW UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARKS ENDORSED BY THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

Following the launch of the UNESCO Global Geoparks designation at the 38th session of the General Conference in November 2015, the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council convened its second statutory meeting during the 5th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN) Symposium 2017 in Zhijindong Cave UNESCO Global Geopark, in Guanzhai village, Zhijin county, Guizhou province, People’s Republic of China, on 16 and 17 September 2017. The UNESCO Global Geoparks Council examined a total of 17 applications submitted by Member States for the nominations of UNESCO Global Geoparks, including two deferred UNESCO Global Geopark applications from the 2016 UNESCO Global Geoparks meeting.
In accordance with Article 5.5 of the Operational Guidelines for UNESCO Global Geoparks as approved by the 38th session of the General Conference (38 C/Resolution 23), the Director-General submitted the nominations decided upon by the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council at its first statutory meeting for the endorsement by the UNESCO Executive Board.
The 13 nominations, 11 new aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks and two deferred aspiring UNESCO Global Geoparks, for the period 2018-2021 have been officially endorsed by the UNESCO Executive Board on April 17 2018. Additional details provided below:
