Summing up workshop 2022 and Activity plan 2023 of Technical Committee on Global Geoparks of Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO

On November 23, 2022, on the margins of the 20th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology and symposium on "15 years of Geopark development in Viet Nam", the Technical Committee on Global Geoparks of Viet Nam National Commission for UNESCO organized a summing up workshop of the year 2022 and proposed activity plan 2023.

There were representative leader of Viet Nam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral resources, the secretary committee of National committee for UNESCO (Natcom), Management boards of UGGps and Aspiring geoparks in Viet Nam and leading geological scientists participating at the Workshop. Mr. Trinh Hai Son, Head of Viet Nam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources chaired the workshop.

In 2022, the Technical Committee cooperated with the international consultant to support the development of geoparks network in Viet Nam. Some of the achievements can be listed including assisting Non nuoc Cao Bang UGGp and Dong Van Karst Plateau UGGp in revalidation mission, supporting and collaborating with Non nuoc Cao Bang UGGp to hold the Annual workshop of the Technical Committee and the capacity building workshop for Viet Nam Geoparks Network in Cao Bang, supporting Non nuoc Cao Bang UGGp in preparing candidature dossier to host the 8th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network Symposium in Cao Bang in 2024; cooperating with Dak Nong Provincial People’s Committee to organize the 20th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology and symposium on "15 years of Geopark development in Viet Nam" in Dak Nong; assisting Lang Son province in conducting additional investigation and evaluation of heritage and preparing Lang Son’s UGGp application dossier.

The Technical Committee has actively together with Viet Nam Geoparks attended activities and events of Global Geoparks Network and Asia Pacific Global Geoparks Network to strengthen and expand cooperation with regional and international geoparks, properly carried out activities on preservation and promotion of UNESCO designated heritage and labels, geoeducation and communication, etc.

In 2023, the Technical Committee will continue to cooperate with international consultant and related agencies to support the development of UNESCO global geopark network of Viet Nam, in which priorities would be given to the environmental improvement, waste treatment in the geopark territory, sustainable development, communication and education, community engagement, planning on the visitor-fee collection mechanism for Management boards of UGGp in Viet Nam.
