Receiving the delegation of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve Management Board to exchange experience in sustainable tourism development

On the November 19th, Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism (DoCST) and the Management Board of Non nuoc Cao Bang Geopark received the delegation of the Management Board of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve to visit and exchange experience in sustainable tourism development and the need to develop agritourism associated with natural heritage.

There were Ms. To Thi Trang, Deputy Director of Cao Bang Provincial Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism; representative leaders and officials of Divisions under the umbrella of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism attending the meeting. On the side of the Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve Management Board, there were Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hao, Director of Dong Nai Culture – Nature Reserve, Standing Deputy Head of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve Management Board, representatives of Departments and Branches of Dong Nai Province, Dong Nai Culture – Nature Reserve, Cat Tien National Park and the Advisory Council and Secretariat of Dong Nai Biosphere Rerserve.

At the meeting, Ms. To Thi Trang, Deputy Director of Cao Bang DoCST introduced general potential, strengths and current status of Cao Bang tourism development. She emphasized that Cao Bang has rich natural resources, famous places of scenic beauty, historical relics and diverse culture featured with ethnic identity. With its heritage of geomorphology, archeology and biodiversity, Non nuoc Cao Bang Geopark was recognized as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2018. This is one of the key factors that helps open up opportunities for developing sustainable community-based tourism, local product branding, attracting tourism investments and creating livelihood for local people.
 

As stated in the Resolution of the 19th Provincial Party Congress, Cao Bang determined that tourism is one of the three breakthroughs for socio-economic development in the period of 2020-2025. Over the past period of establishment and development from 2015 to 2024, the tourism sector of Cao Bang Province has grown rather rapidly thanks to the implementation of the UNESCO Global Geopark model. Due to its efforts to fulfil UNESCO recommendations and active participation in the networking activities of the Global Geopark Network (GGN), Cao Bang was honor to be the host of the 8th Asia Pacific Geoparks Network (APGN) Symposium. Despite taking place when the northern provinces were severely impacted by Typhoon Yagi, the APGN 8 was successfully organized. Important decisions of GGN were agreed on, and a number of solutions, good practices in the development of UNESCO Global Geoparks were shared.

Mr. Tran Van Mui, Former Director of Dong Nai Culture - Nature Reserve, Former Standing Deputy, Head of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve Management Board, Vice Chairperson of the Advisory Council gave remarks at the meeting.
Regarding the establishment and development of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve, Mr. Nguyen Hoang Hao, Director of Dong Nai Culture - Nature Reserve, Standing Deputy Head of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve Management Board said: Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve covers the area of 5 provinces, including: Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Lam Dong and Dak Nong, approximately 756,000 ha. In 2001, Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve was recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve on the basis of expansion and name change from Cat Tien Biosphere Reserve. Known as the “green lung” of the Vietnam Southeast provinces, Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve currently maintains a large area of natural forest with more than 150,000 hectares. The Biosphere Reserve includes natural forests, Ramsar, inland waters, and historical, cultural, and national-level special monuments. Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve is a model of multi-purpose conservation, towards a sustainable development model which harmonizes human and nature.
 
At the meeting, the participants shared their managing and professional experience in conserving and promoting geological and cultural heritage, indigenous knowledge; exchanged and discussed sustainable development models, and demands, roles and lessons in agritourism associated with natural heritage.

Speaking at the meeting, Ms. To Thi Trang, Deputy Director of Cao Bang DoCST expressed her pleasure to welcome the delegation of the Management Board of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve to visit and exchange experience in developing sustainable tourism models. She also affirmed the determination to strengthen the collaboration between the Management Boards of Non nuoc Cao Bang Geopark and Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve; escalating regional linkage, promoting UNESCO Global Geopark value for conserving nature, biodiversity and cultural identity of Dong Nai and Cao Bang provinces.
From November 19 to November 21, the Management Board of Dong Nai Biosphere Reserve will conduct a field survey at heritage sites, Geopark partners’ establishments, traditional craft and community-based tourism villages on the Cao Bang Geopark tourism routes in the Districts of Ha Quang, Nguyen Binh, Quang Hoa and Trung Khanh.
