Dak Nong Geopark successfully hosted the 20th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology and symposium on "15 years of Geopark development in Viet Nam"

During November 22-26, the 20th International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology (ISV 20) and the symposium on "15 years of Geopark development in Viet Nam" were organized in Dak Nong Geopark, which received hundreds of scientists and colleagues from GGN, APGN and UIS-Commission on Volcanic Caves.

The ISV held every 2 years is the most important activity of the Union Internationale de Spéléologie and the Committee of Volcanic Caves (UIS-CVC) to create a forum for exchanging information, researched results and connecting members in this field. The first ISV was held in the Hawaiian Islands in 1972. The countries that have hosted ISVs are Ecuador, Spain, South Korea, Jordan, Australia, Iceland and the USA, Italy.

The topic of the ISV20 is "Conservation and Sustainable Development of Volcanoes and Volcanic Caves". It was expanded to include the system of volcanoes - which are the origin of volcanic caves and are also valuable geological heritages that Dak Nong and some other provinces possess in Vietnam.

The topic of the ISV20 is "Conservation and Sustainable Development of Volcanoes and Volcanic Caves". The symposium is co-organized by Dak Nong Provincial People’s Committee, Viet Nam Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources, Viet Nam National Museum of Nature (Academy of Science and Technology). Seminar sessions included 3 themes: 1- Geology/Geomorphology/Volcano formation process/Cave survey report and data; 2- Using caves / Biology in caves / Volcano formation process / Geology / Management and protection of caves;  3-Geology/ Cave survey report and data / Management and protection of caves, which provided participants the forum to exchange issues related to conservation of volcanoes and volcanic caves and share experiences in conservation and research of volcanoes and volcanic caves, etc.

Parallel to the 20th  International Symposium on Vulcanospeleology (ISV20) is the Symposium on "15 years of Geopark development in Vietnam". Attending the Sympoium, there were Prof. Guy Martini, Chairperson of UNESCO Global Geopark Council, Vietnam UGGps and asprining Geoparks, some UGGps from Korea and Japan. The presentations at the symposium addressed the challenges facing potential geoparks in Africa and Latin America, Geoheritage and Geoparks in Japan, development and achievements of Mudeungsan UGGp, Jeju Island UGGp (Korea), Cooperation in Japanese Geopark Network; the establishment and development of Geoparks in Viet Nam, experiences in the development and management of Geoparks in Vietnam. The symposium was a good chance for the Vietnam Geoparks Network to review and evaluate the development of Geoparks in Viet Nam after 15 years as well as to exchange experiences in geopark management and operation and organizing activities within the Viet Nam Geoparks Network and experienced UGGps from other countries.

Within the framework of both symposia, MoUs of Dak Nong UGGp (Vietnam) and Dong Van Karst Plateau UGGp (Vietnam) with Mudeungsan UGGp (R. Korea) were well signed. In addition, a digital meeting among the UGGps in APGN with volcanic caves, such as Jeju Island (R. Korea), Rinjani-Lombok (Indonesia), Aso (Japan) and Dak Nong (Vietnam) highlighted the symposia’s activities. The participants of the symposia had chances to explore magnificent volcanoes and geological and cultural heritage in Dak Nong UGGp.
