New UNESCO Global Geoparks Candidatures

On Thursday 21st of February 2019 the 4th open session of the International Geosciences and Geoparks Programme took place in Paris.
Mr Xiang Qu, UNESCO Deputy Director General with the members of the IGCP Council

Following the decision of the GGN ExB a delegation of the GGN Executive Board participated in the meeting which was aimed to present: a. The results of the IGCP Board Meeting, b. The new candidatures for the UNESCO Global Geoparks Programme. The GGN ExB delegation included Nickolas Zouros, Kristin Rangnes, Marie-Luise Frey. Present at the meeting were also GGN members Martina Paskova (Czech Republic) and Artur Sá (Portugal).

The IGCP open meeting itself was very interesting and helpful to understand what is the current thinking of the UNESCO Secretariat regarding the IGCP and the UGGp. There is a clear change in the strategy and priorities of the IGCP as we can understand from the announcements made regarding the new projects approved and financed.

The change is visible in the shift from the “science for science” approach to the “science for life” approach. In this change of approach, the UNESCO Global Geoparks and GGN, which makes them productive and synergic through networking, have very high importance in presence and even higher potential importance in future. Because in the marriage of IGCP with UGGs, the IGCP (catalysed by IUGS) represents science and UGGs (catalysed by GGN) represents life.

Mr Xiang Qu, UNESCO Deputy Director General opened the meeting. He outlined the aiming objectives of the Programme thanking IGCP Council Members for their work and all National delegations present at the event.

Dr. Miguel Clüsener-Godt, Director of the Division of Ecological and Earth Sciences, in his opening speech referred to the activities of the IGGP Council Meeting. He referred to the IGGP saying that the programme has two pillars, he first pillar of IGGP is the International Geoscience Programme (IGCP) which is a join initiative between UNESCO and IUGS and thanked IUGS for the cooperation between UNESCO and IUGS. He mentioned also to the second pillar is UNESCO Global Geoparks and the presentation of the new Candidatures for the Programme.

The IGCP responsible from the Secretariat Dr. Ozlem Adiyaman-Lopez thanked the GGN as the partner of UNESCO for the UNESCO Global Geoparks Programme and referred to the presence of the delegation of GGN Executive Board at the event.
