Summing – up meeting of 2018 and developing activity plan 2019 of the Geopark task force of Viet Nam

On January 18th 2019, the Geopark Technical task force organized the Summing-up meeting of 2018 and discussing the Acitivity plan 2019. 
Overview of the Conference

Representatives of National Commission for UNESCO Viet Nam (NATCOM), Ministries of Environment and Natural resource, Science and Technology, Cultures sports and tourism and representatives of Management boards of UNESCO global geoparks, and aspiring geoparks of Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Dac nong, Quang Ngai, research institutes participated at the meeting. Mr Tran Tan Van, Head of the Institude of Geology and Natural resource, Ministry of Environment and Natural resources chaired the meeting.

In 2018, the Technical Task force actively assisted the development of geopark in some provinces of Viet Nam. On April 12th 2018, the 204th meeting of the UNESCO Executive board in Paris approved the Resolution recognized Non nuoc Cao Bang as a UNESCO global geopark, this has made it the second UNESCO global geopark in Viet Nam.

The mission of NATCOM, Institude of Geology and Natural resource, and UNESCO experts (Mr. Guy Martini) finished the baseline surveys on the potentials for the development of UNESCO global geopark in some provinces such as: Quang Ngai (February 2018); Gia Lai (April and August 2018); Dak Nong (7-8/2018). The Task force also supported the definition of heritage sites and the development of application dossier of Dak Nong geopark had it submitted to UNESCO for the designation of UNESCO global geopark lable in November 2018.

In addition, the Institude of Geology and Natural resource continued to cooperate with the UNESCO expert to support Dak Nong to prepare for the Evaluation mission, which was scheduled in July 2019. Currently the Technical Task force has been supporting Ly Son- Sa Huy geopark to conduct survey to evaluate the potentials of geological heritage and define the heritage sites for the development of the application dossier, which was scheduled to be submitted to UNESCO in November 2019. 

The Institude of Geology and Natural resource supported People’s committee of Cao Bang province and Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark to define the conservation and development area and proposed the solutions for the conservation, and promotion of Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark, which is scheduled to be completed in 2019. Under the guideline of the Natural science Task force (Ministry of Science and Technology) and National Commission for UNESCO, the Institute of Geology and Mineral resources collaborated with provinces of Cao Bang, Ha Giang, Dak Nong, Gia Lai carried out the research project on indigenous knowledge in assisting the awareness improvement of communities on geological heritages and geopark.

In 2019, the Technical Task force would focus its implementation on the Government’s Proposal on geological heritage/Geopark; the central level-scientific proposal on the establishment of geopark in Thua Thien – Hue province; Proposal on indeginous knowledge in Ha Giang, Cao Bang, Gia Lai, Dak Nong on geo-harzzard in karst area that designated or going to be designated by UNESCO; and submitting some new proposals on supporting the development of geopark in provinces.

The Task force would continous to collaborate with research institutes in the country to support Geoparks in Viet Nam; organizing national Conference, supporting the revalidation of UNESCO global geopark; developing the set of geopark partner criteria; applying the procedures for National UNESCO global geopark designation; and supporting the organization of International Conference on UNSECO global geopark, tools for sustainable tourism development in Cao Bang province.
