Accoring to the Department of Environment and Natural resources, there are 59 licensed mines, in which there are 21 mines are in the geopark territory, and not located near the national and provincial roads or tourists experience routes of Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark; 4 contruction material production mines that are not in the geopark territory, but can be partly visible to tourists.
There are 34 minterial exploitation mines located in the UNESCO non nuoc Cao Bang geopark territory that need being reviewed so that these would not influence the landscapes and fit into the development plan of Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark. Among those, there are 17 mines needs the province to issue decision to ensure the landcape values; 17 mines do not need the province to issue decision because they are not located near the national road and visible to visitors and do not influence the changes of topography and landscapes or some mines are in the process to return the license on mineral exploitation.
Based on the findings of the review, and discussion of participants, Department of Environment and Natural resources proposed some groups of solution, including: Permission to continue mining activities with the licensed area and capacity but need suitable selection of the venue to meeting the criteria on environment and landscapes, so that these mines can be positioned and operated in the long term; Increasing the exploitation capacity according to the license, then proceed to close the mine; Continueing the mineral exploitation in the long run, but need amendments in the procedure and exploitation system.
Mr.Nguyen Trung Thao, Vice Chairman of People’s committee of Cao Bang province suggestd the Department of Environment and Natural resources consult the People’s committee of Cao Bang province in issueing the letter to ask for feedback from the Ministry of Environment and Natural resources on the exploitation of contruction material located near the transportation roads; Management board of Non nuoc Cao Bang UGGp consult the People’s committee on issueing document on solutions for mining activities, especially gravel production mines according to suggestions from the UNESCO expert; pospone the issuance of license for construction material production mines that can be visible along the national, provincial and tourist routes in the three experiences routes of Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark while waiting for the guideline from Ministry of Environment and Natural resources and comments from UNESCO expert, etc.
