Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark partners develop traditional crafts associated with sustainable tourism

For generations, traditional crafts have not only preserved cultural values imbued with national identity but also provided a livelihood that contributed to ensuring the lives of the people in craft village. In recent times, the partner establishments of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark have promoted the development of traditional crafts associated with sustainable tourism, thereby actively contributing to the spreading and promotion of tourism in the UNESCO Non Nuoc Cao Bang Global Geopark.

Until June 2024, the province has 21 traditional craft villages, of which 8 are recognized by the Provincial People's Committee. With the timely attention of Party committees, authorities, and functional sectors, especially the companionship and support of the Management Board of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark in the work of preserving traditional craft villages associated with tourism development and improving people's livelihoods, the partners of the Management Board of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark have constantly improved their tourism service skills as well as their awareness of preserving traditional crafts in the context of integration. Inheriting traditional handicraft techniques in the production process, people in craft villages continue to learn and gain experience to improve, diversify designs, and improve product quality associated with the historical and cultural values of the land and people in the locality. In addition, product introduction on media platforms, exhibition fairs, tourism events, domestic and regional Geopark network events is enhanced... In particular, it focuses on preserving and promoting strengths in terms of unique cultural values, customs, festivals, values of natural landscapes, architecture, and historical relics, and diversifying attractive and interesting tourism experiences. Thereby, not only bringing new vitality to traditional crafts but also contributing to promoting the heritages of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark to national and international tourists.

Initially, some community tourism spots and craft village tourism spots in Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark has taken advantage of available advantages to exploit tourism potential in order to attract tourists to visit and experience, bringing economic efficiency, contributing to "awakening" the local potential, typically: Pac Rang community tourism village, Phuc Sen commune, Quang Hoa district; Dia Tren paper village, Phuc Sen commune, Quang Hoa district; Phja Thap incense village, Phuc Sen commune, Quang Hoa district; Luong Noi brocade weaving workshop, Ngoc Dao commune, Ha Quang district; Dao Tien weaving workshop, Hoa Tham commune, Nguyen Binh district.

To increase product value and expand the consumption market, the partner establishments of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark in Dia Tren paper village have cooperated with the “Zo Project” social enterprise, applying high-quality paper weaving techniques under the guidance of artisans from Bac Ninh Do paper village; researching the transmission of ethnic cultural elements into products; diversifying paper sizes and formats, creating many designs of paper products such as paper fans, envelopes, calligraphy paintings, drawings, notebooks, paper flowers.... The group of women sharing the benefits of developing craft villages established production groups, assigning tasks among members; maintaining exchanges and sharing experiences to improve skills; deploying experience spaces, and shelves displaying products made from local paper and agricultural products... Mr. Nong Van Thanh, Dia Tren paper village, Phuc Sen commune (Quang Hoa), a partner of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, said: Restoring and developing the traditional craft of making handmade paper associated with experiential tourism activities brings the Dia Tren paper brand as well as the ethnic cultural identity of the Nung An people closer to tourists. Currently, on average, each month Dia Tren Paper Village welcomes about 20 - 30 groups of visitors to visit, and participate in the experience of making paper and producing handicraft products... contributing to improving the income of households doing the job.

Stemming from the enthusiasm for preserving and developing the traditional handicraft of his homeland, in addition to the traditional Phja Thap incense product, Mr. Hoang Van Thuy, Phja Thap hamlet, Phuc Sen commune (Quang Hoa), a potential partner of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark, has researched and tested the production of incense cones and incense sticks used in meditation, relaxation, air purification, insect repellent, etc. In the coming time, Mr. Thuy will continue to improve the quality, perfect the design, and design the product packaging so that Phja Thap incense not only meets the needs of simple use but also becomes a valuable gift in modern life, suitable for the needs of the market and tourists. In addition, Mr. Thuy's family also actively cooperated with the hamlet and commune authorities and some households to participate in activities to promote tourism development in Phja Thap hamlet such as building experience spaces, check-in points, product display booths... contributing to improving the quality of local tourism services.
With the quality and uniqueness imbued with national culture, Phja Thap incense products, Dia Tren paper, and Luong Noi brocade were selected by the Provincial People's Committee as gifts for delegates attending the 8th Asia-Pacific UNESCO Global Geopark Network Symposium in 2024 in Cao Bang.
